Mini Trip Review: Skiing to Callaghan’s Journeyman Lodge, British Columbia, Canada

Quick Facts

  • Question: from my friend Dave Voeller: “Do you want to ski eight miles into a one-of-a-kind wilderness lodge (with sauna) near Whistler in British Columbia with Rebekah and me?”
  • Answer: “Um…yes, how soon can we leave?”
  • Reserve: book well in advance here, superior rooms have their own bath, bunk room on third floor for the younger set: https://www.thecallaghan.com/journeyman-lodge.htm
  • Fare: three Epicurean meals provided daily, communal appetizers, and dining where you meet people like the nice couple from Australia revisiting the lodge after a 20 year interval.
  • Getting there: stay here the night before in nearby town of Squamish, 3.5 hour drive from Seattle, a combination brewpub/motel: https://www.howesound.com/howesoundinn
  • What to do: miles of groomed trails for classic/skate skiing, snowshoeing, and access to world-class back-country adventure.
  • Recommended: book in-house guiding service for back-country day trip high up into avalanche territory and fresh tracks down. Double check battery level on transceiver before starting in the morning.
  • Minor epiphany: no matter how bad of a night’s sleep you’ve had after apparently consuming something disagreeable, sometimes when morning comes you just have to get up, put your skis on, and get out there. Life doesn’t wait, and neither does the un-tracked powder snow.
  • Quote: “Don’t hope that events will turn out the way you want, welcome events in whichever way they happen: this is the path to peace.”—Epictetus
